Allmath.com is a product of Arbor Media Inc. of Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is a cost free commercial and service site intended mainly for elementary and middle school students. Currently allmath.com provides a question and answer service, biographies of famous mathematicians, a math glossary, math tools such as metric conversion, flashcards, charts, definitions, and games. It also provides links to other educational math sites. Allmath.com regularly updates their site and plans on adding additional functions and games. The site is user friendly and easy to use. It provides opportunities for drill and practice and is useful because of the mathematical terms, definitions, and biographies that it contains.

Illuminations is intended for use by teachers, students, and parents. It includes interactive investigations, internet-based lesson plans, web resources, and recommendations and standards from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Interactive investigations are the only student activities offered from this site. Investigations are available for different grade levels, but are very challenging, require competent computer and internet use, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Illuminations: Principles and Standards for School Mathematics is definitely not the most interesting site for students, but is beneficial to teachers and parents because of the mathematical principles and standards displayed.

Edu4kids is a commercial and service site that provides activities for students grades K-12 in the area of math, science, language, and social studies. Interactive math games include flashcards, table drills, money, and time activities. I particularly enjoyed the money activities. Students choose to add money, make change, or spend a specific amount of money. This site provides a link to go shopping but does not provide any other links. Edu4kids does not have the best graphics, but is still beneficial and great to use

Mathstories.com is a service site that is intended for students K-8. This site is composed of thousands of mathematical word problems for students to solve. The story problems are on pages that need to be printed out for completion. Problems are not solved directly on the web site. Mathstories.com provides the answers at the bottom of each page. Copies are permitted for individual and classroom use. Many of the problems center around a specific theme like The Three Little Pigs and Harry Potter. Word problems from other schools and classrooms have been submitted and are now included. This site gives excellent directions and is really fun. Teachers and parents can use this site to assist their children with critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Math Central is a Canadian site that provides dialogue in French and English. This is a service site intended primarily for teacher use, but does have a question and answer service that may also be useful for students. Additional math links are not included in this site. Math Central consists of the following four components: teacher talk, quandaries & queries, bulletin board, and resource room. The purpose of this site is to provide information and resources to math teachers. It also allows them to communicate with each other. I found the bulletin board section useful as it has listings of upcoming conferences, organizations, journals, and periodicals. Overall, this is a fairly useful site for math educators. New teachers might benefit from talking with other more seasoned educators.

Lycos Zone – Homework Zone is a free-of-charge homework helper site for middle level students pertaining to all academic areas. The main page is visually clear, offering buttons leading to descriptions and examples of academic topics. In the math category, concepts such as decimals, fractions, and the metric system are displayed. These could be helpful to a student who may need additional explanations to supplement class discussions. Also provided in the Homework Zone for math is a search engine, a categorized section linking to further math sites "On the Web," and a "Math Games" link.

Funschool.com is a regularly updated educational service web site geared toward students in grades K-6. The home page is user friendly allowing grade appropriate selections. Each level provides a variety of games in various academic areas. Math games cover areas such as counting, matching, addition, multiplication, and so on. Some of the fun titles to the games include "Monster Numbers," "Fishing for Numbers," and my personal two favorite games "Paint Brush Math" at the 1st grade level and "Multiplication Bridge" at the 2nd grade level. Funschool.com is just that, fun! It contains over 300 games for children! So, sit back, click around, and have fun!

A+ Math is a cost-free site for elementary aged students that is can be utilized both on and off line. The site is particularly useful for students as one can visit and play in the game room, receive assistance with problems, or practice using flashcards. For parents and educators, the site is able to create worksheets and design flashcards to print out for off-line practice. Although the site does not have a search engine, the home page is user friendly as it is clear and easy to read. Once clicking on one of the four main areas: Flashcards, Game Room, Homework Helper, or Worksheets, the next page is just as user friendly. The main category is broken into basic math areas (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). The flashcard section includes rounding and square roots.

The Learning Site is associated with Harcourt School Publishers. It is a free service site that also offers a catalog for purchasing products. A "search" button is available in the home page to search within the web site. The home page also clearly separates academic subjects for easy accessibility. The math area is broken into grades K-8 with an array of games for each level. Math topics include matching, modeling addition of 2-digit numbers, counting, fractions, and much more! The majority of the games provide easy-to-follow directions. A few games do not provide directions, but a little playing and they can be figured out. Overall, I found this site enjoyable to use.

Lifelong.com is an up and coming service site providing a wide range of academic and non-academic activities and information to K-12 students, parents, and teachers. Currently, the math section contains two entertaining "Monster Math" games, which work on basic elementary level skills (counting, addition, and subtraction). The monster graphics are colorful and creative as children work their way through story problems. Reading is a requirement; therefore some children may need assistance. Lifelong.com continues to add games and activities to its site. Look for "Monster Math the Sequel" this fall!

AIMS Online is a division of the Association for Integrating Math and Science. The site provides both commercial access to AIMS materials and workshops as well as cost-free services, including: computer downloads, puzzles, games and teacher resources that integrate math and science content areas. Sample activities at primary, intermediate, and secondary levels (changed monthly) can be viewed and printed in Adobe Acrobat and include full lesson plans, supplies list, management tips, discussion questions, and extension topics, as well as all necessary worksheets for students to complete the activities. Sample activities also detail the target math and science skills covered in each lesson and correlation to national curriculum standards. The activities are all hands-on and provide manageable and informative lessons that "come-alive" for students with the use of manipulatives.

This site is linked to Scholastic’s commercial web site and occasionally includes links to suggested resources that can be purchased from Scholastic. However, the online activities and games are cost-free and provide interactive math fun for students up to eighth grade. Kids USA Survey introduces students to graphs and charts using results from real online surveys, while Max’ Math Adventures and Math Maven’s Mysteries require creative thinking and problem solving skills to solve real-world math problems. The reading levels vary, but are grouped age appropriately and often in a rhyming format that appeals to student and teacher. The site also provides a teacher’s guide to the activities that includes learning objectives, lesson plans with approximate time requirements, extensions, assessment, Scholastic resources, and national standards correlations.

Kids Bank.Com! is a service provided by Sovereign Bank that teaches students about currency and banking functions through the introduction of fun and friendly characters ranging from Penny to Mr. EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer). Each character follows through story panels that explain monetary equivalencies, historical information, and life skills. Students can challenge themselves to interactive quizzes at two levels that result in printable personalized certificates when mastery is achieved or use the calculator section to identify how long it would take them to save a million dollars, meet holiday (or other) savings goals, or purchase an automobile. Also available is Mr. Money, a bulletin board dedicated to children’s questions and answers about money. Children can post messages as well as reply to those posted by others. Information for parents is provided. This site is great for introducing younger students to monetary concepts, although older students might benefit from following the Professor link throughout the stories for more in-depth information and assessment.

If you are looking for printable worksheets with answer keys, lesson plans grouped by topic area, puzzles, and message boards, then Mrs. Glosser’s Math Goodies is a site to see. This site is targeted towards teachers, students, parents and homeschoolers at the secondary level. It is easy to use and covers a wide range of math topics. The message boards are separated into relavent topic areas including specific areas for parents, students and teachers. A search engine is also provided. Overall this is a great, comprehensive site for use in your classroom or home.

Developed under a grant from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education this site takes a family approach to math. The Family Corner provides resources for parents, highlighting real life situations in regards to homework, support, and school with answers that are usable and realistic. Students are also challenged to use their problem solving skills to solve various "challenges". The challenges, while realistic, can be difficult, but provide links to clues that break down the problem into easier, more manageable tasks. The topics selected are current and should appeal to a wide variety of students.

Mathematics Lessons that are Fun, Fun, Fun is a cost-free, service site, which has activities and links for grades K- adult. The homepage on this site provides a box, which will explain what each area is and give an appropriate grade level. Students may use this site for activities such as counting and fractions. These activities meet NTCM standards and some allow you to print out the activity so you can work off-line. Teachers/Parents will find the teacher notes helpful when planning to introduce students to an activity. Some subject areas provide links to other web resources on that topic which teachers/parents may find useful. Teachers/Parents may choose to explain an activity or adapt to students’ ability.

It is a service website that provides cost-free access to geometry lessons, map and graph lessons, real world lessons, math terminology, and general math lessons. Fleet Kids is a cost-free service website, which provides games for middle school and high school level students. The activities on this site concentrate on earning, saving, and investing money. Some of the activities include a kid stock market game, and managing your own baseball team. Fleet Kids offers a free activity book (with off-line and on-line games) for teachers to use to support what the students learn from the site. Although the site is free, it does require visitors to sign-up to play the games. You can sign-up as an individual or as a school. Schools that sign-up, have a chance to win prizes and can compete with local schools.

Coolmath.com is a service website filled with activities and games for K-adult. Currently on Coolmath.com, you can practice arithmetic, figure out math puzzles, learn about geometry, run a lemonade stand, and get links to other cool math oriented websites. Overall, this is a good interactive online website for practicing math concepts. In fall 2000, look for new teacher, parent, and science sections, which are now being created.

It is a service website, which provides cost-free access to elementary, middle, and high school instructional math units. The units include fractions, geometry, probability, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Each unit is complete with outcomes, overviews, needed materials and more. Although this site does not have a search engine, it separates units by level and by concept. This site gives the option of viewing or downloading units using Adobe Acrobat. Overall, it is a good site for teachers looking for creative units that teach math concepts.
