EDD 513-Elementary Internship in Learning Disabilities

and EDD 515-Secondary Internship in Learning Disabilities

The internship program in learning disabilities is designed to meet the needs of working teachers.  Two internships are required.  The internships follow a sequence that begins with the first internship in public summer school programs.  A seminar course is taken concurrently with the first internship.

The summer internships are completed in public school settings during the summer vacation months.

Some of the summer school programs start in June after the public school summer vacation begins.  Other programs do not begin until after July 4th.  Prospective interns must enroll in both the spring and summer sessions.

The second practicum is completed in the intern's employment setting or in a setting that has been approved by the university.  This takes place during the following fall term or winter term.

The internship practicum in learning disabilities provides students with experience in the following:

-         administration of standardized assessment materials with one student selected by the on-site mentor teacher in collaboration with the university supervisor

-         writing a diagnostic report that summarizes the data from the assessment

-         completing  a mock IEPT report including all associated documentation

-         prescribing methods and materials for teaching learning disabled students

-         completing 90 to 150 hours of on-site teaching experience (hours vary according to the site)

-         collaborating with parents, teachers, administrators and support staff

-         documenting professional time using a variety of techniques

-         participation in weekly on-line discussion with peers

EDN 508 Internship Seminar is taken concurrently with the first internship

The seminar will focus on the discussion, development, and evaluation of Individualized Educational Programs, Individualized Transition Plans, Response to Intervention Plans, and Behavior Intervention Plans for students with learning disabilities at a variety of internship sites.
